Dell, Sony and More - Laptop Deals
The perk of being from the typewriter era was that I never told my mom, “I reeeallly need to have one!” There was no way I was lugging that back and forth to school - up hill both ways and through four feet of snow. Times are a changin’ though and it seems everyone “needs” a laptop/notebook/netbook for school. With back-to-school deals already popping up, we thought we’d put together the skinny on a few laptop deals.
The goods: Here you’ll find 10 series of the VAIO Notebooks. “Constantly evolving, each model in the lineup features innovative design elements and a rare blend of colors and textures that cannot be overlooked” Is this a description of plastic or the latest frocks hitting the Milan runway? We found a very handy dandy list of series comparisons that will help you determine what you really need. Just look for the black Compare All button on the main laptop page.

The Goods: TigerDirect.ca offers a variety of new and refurbished laptops. Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, and Asus are a few of the brands they carry. And if you scroll to the bottom of the laptop page and read the fine print under the heading Laptops, Notebooks and Laptop Computers, you’ll find a few tips on how to muddle your way through the mess of gigabytes, RAM and CPUs.
Deals: Be sure to check out their overstock and open box sections for many great deals. Prices range anywhere from $260 for a Gateway refurbished Netbook to $7,500 for the Visionman Widow gaming laptop.
Shipping: Depending on the quantity and distance, shipping is reasonable. One laptop to Vancouver is roughly $10.
The Goods: Another online electronics site, Newegg Inc. is the second-largest online-only retailer. They are just starting week one of their Back-to-school specials, so there will be more deals to come.
Deals: Free Shipping on some laptops.
The Goods: Swoopo, an online auction site, launched in Canada in June 2009. All items are brand new. Here is how it works: online customers buy “bids” in advance. They cost $0.60 each and are sold in packs of 40, 75, 150, 400 or 1000. Bidders have the choice of placing single bids, or, using an electronic bid assistant called the “BidButler”. Every bid placed, increases the price of the product by 12c and the auction countdown by up to 20 seconds. To help keep track of the money spent on bidding, each auction displays the amount spent on bids by the customer and how much the bidder would save overall, if they won the auction at that moment.
Deals: Netbooks and Laptops. When we checked out the site, $800 laptops were going for $89 and under. Most were around $20. We’d like to stress that we have not used this site, but please give us your feedback if you have.
Shipping: The shipping rates are listed on each individual product – most were approximately $20 for laptops, but again vary on where you live.
The Goods: Normally, I don’t think Sears when shopping for laptops, but they do have a fair selection. They carry Toshiba, Acer, HP and MDG brand names. Prices here range from $349 for a 10” Netbook to $2,200 for an 18” Qosmio.
Deals: None on laptops right now, but we’ll keep you posted. Use your Sears card, and get points, which you can redeem on a little bit of everything, including Petro-points.
Shipping: Free if you pick it up from a Sears location. Handling is $3.00.
