Money Saving Tip - Holiday Shopping Money Saving Tips!

Saving money with your holiday shoppingAs hard as it is to believe, the holidays are fast approaching and while there might be no way around the holiday shopping ahead of you, there are some shopping tips and tricks that can help you save money this holiday season. First things first, before you even hit the computer or stores, start by making a list ... yes, just like the jolly guy in red. Having a list and a budget will save you money and time in the long run.

In-Store
  • Don't be afraid to ask "is that your best price?" You'd be surprised how many places will negotiate on a ticketed price (tools, appliances, bikes, electronics and more!)
  • Ask if there are any coupons available ... once again you'd be surprised at how often this has panned out to a savings!
  • Do your research and be aware of prices so you can ask for price matching. Many stores will price match and some will even beat their competitors by 5%-10%
  • Check the store's website and facebook page. Often times you can find flyers and promotions happening on store websites and Facebook pages are a great source for promotional information.
  • Sign up and save - many stores will send out coupon codes or special offers if you sign up for their newsletter (you can always unsubscribe).
  • If the savings are good enough, sign up for an instore credit card. The trick here, to avoid overspending and building up debt, is to immediately pay for your bill with cash or your debit card. At most stores now, you can pay right at the same cashier immediately after your credit purchase. (Click Read More below for full article...)
Online
  • Always do a search for "store + coupon code" or promo code.
  • Sign up and save - many online shops will send out coupon codes or special offers if you sign up for their newsletter (you can always unsubscribe).
  • Check for FREE shipping in Canada offers here. And if shipping costs are a bit high, we always say  ... shop with a friend and save. You can split the shipping costs and take advantage of the deals.
  • If the online store has a local address, see if you can pick up in person to save on shipping.
  • Once again, be sure and know your prices. You can often call / email customer support and have them price match.
  • If you live close to a US border you can save big shopping online at US sites as well as take advantage of their many FREE shipping offers by having items shipped to a US parcel pickup business (often for as little as $2 a package).
  • For homemade or vintage items be sure and check out sites like icraft.ca or etsy and do a search for "sale" or "promo codes".
  • In this day and age, don’t be afraid to watch the group buy sites for great deals leading up to the holidays. Many sites offer discounts on activities (snow shoeing, carol boats) and services as well as products. And a gift voucher for a pedicure will be just as appreciated whether you paid full price or half price!
Groceries
  • Watch for coupon sites like websaver, save.ca and more (see our complete list here)
  • Turkey prices - you should be able to find frozen grade A turkeys for around 99¢/lb nearer to the holidays.
  • If you live near a US border, hit the grocery stores after the US Thanksgiving and you're likely to find lots of sale items you can freeze until December.

If you collect Air Miles or other reward points and the holiday budget is looking tight, now might be the time to cash in for some holiday gifts. Things like movie tickets and smaller gadgets / toys are great things to look for.
